Starting Out as a Nail Tech: Our Guide to Getting Set Up
Starting your journey as a nail tech is exciting, but let’s be honest, it can also feel a bit overwhelming.
There’s so much more to think about than just nails. From tax and business bank accounts to booking systems, training, and choosing the right brand, there are lots of decisions to make in those early days.
At HONA, we speak to so many nail techs who are just getting started, and a lot of the same questions come up again and again. So, we wanted to pull together one simple guide with the advice we’d give to anyone starting out.
And because some of the best advice comes from people who are already living it, we asked our community to share their own thoughts and tips too. You’ll find an FAQ-style section packed with advice from fellow nail techs, and if you want to be part of these conversations in future, make sure you join the HONA Community.
1. Finances, Tax and Getting Yourself Set Up Properly
One of the best things you can do early on is get organised with your money.
It might feel a bit unnecessary when you’re only just starting out, but separating your personal finances from your business finances makes life much easier from day one. It gives you a clearer picture of what your business is actually earning, makes it easier to track expenses, and can save you a lot of stress when it’s time to do your tax return.
Why open a business account?
You do not have to overcomplicate it, but having a separate account for your nail business is a smart move.
It helps you:
- Keep personal spending separate from business income
- See exactly what’s coming in and going out
- Track expenses more easily
- Stay more organised for tax time
- Build better habits as your business grows
Even if you are only doing nails as a side income right now, treating it like a business from the beginning can make a huge difference.

Open a second account for tax
This is one of the simplest tips, but one of the most useful.
A lot of nail techs find it helpful to move a percentage of every payment into a separate savings pot or second account ready for tax. That way, when your tax bill comes around, you are not scrambling to find the money.
It also helps you avoid seeing all of your income as spendable profit, because it isn’t. Some of it will need to be set aside for tax and National Insurance depending on your earnings.
When do you need to do a Self Assessment?
If you are self-employed, you may need to complete a Self Assessment tax return. HMRC says tax returns are completed after the end of the tax year, which runs to 5 April, and if you need to register for Self Assessment you must usually tell HMRC by 5 October following the end of the tax year. Online returns and payments are generally due by 31 January.
That means:
- Tax year ends: 5 April
- Register by: 5 October
- Online tax return deadline: 31 January
- Tax payment deadline: 31 January
- Second payment on account, if applicable: 31 July
You should always check your own situation on HMRC, but the main takeaway is this: do not leave it until the last minute.

We also have a separate guide on completing a Tax Self Assessment.
What if nails are your second income?
This is a really common question.
If you have a normal employed job and do nails on the side, your employed income is usually taxed through PAYE, while your self-employed nail income may still need to be reported separately through Self-Assessment. HMRC also notes that if you have more than one job, you may have different tax codes for each employment, and separate self-employed income still needs to be declared where relevant.
What support is available?
The good news is that you do not have to figure it all out alone.
HMRC has guidance for people working for themselves, detailed support for self-employment, and options like Budget Payment Plans or Time to Pay arrangements in some cases if you are worried about a bill.
The main thing is to stay informed, stay organised, and ask for help early.
2. Booking Systems: Find One That Works for You
When you are first starting out, booking systems can feel like a “later on” job, but choosing the right setup early can save you loads of time.
The best booking system is not necessarily the one with the most features. It is the one that works for you and your business.
Think about what you actually want from it:
- Do you want clients to book online?
- Do you need deposits and cancellation protection?
- Do you want reminder texts or emails?
- Do you want it to link with a website?
- Do you want it to help manage your diary around other work or family life?
Some systems are simple and affordable. Others come with more advanced features like websites, forms, automated reminders and marketing tools. It really depends on where you are in your journey and what you need it to do for you.

Before choosing one, ask yourself:
- What does it cost monthly?
- Does it save me enough time to justify the cost?
- Will it grow with me?
- Does it make the client experience feel smooth?
Sometimes paying a little more for a system that keeps you organised and protects your time is worth it.
3. Invest in Training
Training is one of the best investments you can make in yourself and your business.
It can be tempting to think that once you are qualified, that is it, but the best nail techs never stop learning. The industry evolves constantly, and ongoing education helps you improve your skills, work more efficiently, and feel more confident in what you are offering clients.
Additional courses can make a big difference over time too. For example, learning skills like e-file techniques can help appointments run more smoothly and save time in the long run when used correctly and safely.
- Confidence
- Speed and efficiency
- Safer services
- Better results
- Stronger client trust
- Higher-value appointments
This is also where choosing education that genuinely supports your long-term growth matters. At HONA, education is a huge part of what we do, because we believe nail techs deserve more than just products, they deserve support, guidance, and opportunities to keep growing too.

4. Choosing the Right Brand for You
Choosing a nail brand is about so much more than just picking colours you like.
The brand you use becomes part of your service, your client experience, and your reputation. So, it is worth taking your time and asking the right questions before jumping in.

Things to consider:
Is it future-proof?
Can you see yourself growing with this brand? Does it offer the kind of products, education and support you will need not just now, but later too?
Do your values align?
Do you actually connect with the brand? Do you like what it stands for? Does it care about safety, education, innovation, community, or the things that matter to you?
Is there support?
If something goes wrong, can you get help? Is there real education? Is there a team behind the brand who want to support nail techs properly?
What is the customer service like?
This matters more than people think. Fast, helpful and knowledgeable customer support can make a huge difference when you are running your own business.
Does the brand help you feel confident?
Sometimes it comes down to this. Do you trust the products? Do you trust the education? Do you feel supported using them on your clients?
The right brand should feel like more than somewhere you buy products from. It should feel like a partner in your journey.
